Echoing modern satellite bathymetry and hydrographic survey missions that officially struck the last remaining historical 'phantom islands' from world navigation charts.
Why I created this today:
For centuries, the world's oceans were populated by islands born of optical mirages, iceberg drifts, transcription errors, and wishful thinking. Captain Cook, Spanish galleon navigators, and 19th-century whalers dutifully logged islands that stayed on official world charts for hundreds of years. I built this interactive historical atlas where you can inspect antique parchment maps, trigger modern sonar soundings into 3,000-meter abyssal trenches, read original captain logs, and unseal official Notices to Mariners expunging them from existence.
