Sandy Island (Île de Sable)

CHARTED: 1774 by James Cook // EXPUNGED: 2012 by RV Southern Surveyor
CONFIRMED PHANTOM (VOID)

Charted by Captain James Cook aboard HMS Resolution in 1774 and verified by whalers in 1876. Sandy Island remained on official admiralty hydrographic maps, world globes, and even Google Earth for 238 years until an Australian marine research team sailed to the coordinates and sounded 1,400 meters of deep abyss.

Sounding Results

TARGET: SANDY ISLAND EXPEDITION
SURFACE DEPTH: 1,420 METERS (ABYSS)
GEOLOGICAL ECHO: ZERO REEF PROFILE DETECTED
SOUND VELOCITY IN SEAWATER: 1,500 m/s (4,921 ft/s)
The Pumice Raft Hypothesis: Modern oceanographers believe Cook actually witnessed a 20-mile-wide floating raft of volcanic pumice stone expelled by an underwater caldera eruption, which drifted and later sank.

Eyewitness Navigational Logs

"At 4 PM, standing to the eastward, made the land extending from N.b.E. to E.S.E., distance five or six leagues; it appeared to be an island of moderate height, which we called Sandy Isle. Sounded with 120 fathoms, but found no bottom."

— Captain James Cook, Logbook of HMS Resolution (September 1774)

Optical Physics: The Fata Morgana

Warm air resting over cold ocean waters bends light rays downward toward the earth. This complex atmospheric ducting can project images of distant coastlines dozens of miles past the true horizon, creating towering cliffs and phantom fortresses out of thin air.

ADMIRALTY HYDROGRAPHIC NOTICE NO. 2026-09-14

Mariners and hydrographic agencies are hereby instructed to strike the following charted feature from all maritime navigating rolls, digital ECDIS chart plotters, and nautical atlases:
FEATURE: SANDY ISLAND (ÎLE DE SABLE) // 19°15'S 159°56'E

Surveys confirm water depths exceed 1,400 meters. The designated territorial waypoint contains only open ocean abyss. No sovereign claim or navigation warning remains in effect.
