Marking the approach of the September Equinox and the 2026 archaeoastronomy symposium decoding Hellenistic stereographic projections and gear trains.
Why I created this today:
Before mechanical clocks, microprocessors, or GPS satellites, ancient astronomers carried the entire rotating cosmos on a handheld disc of engraved brass. Invented in Hellenistic Alexandria and perfected by medieval astronomers, the planar astrolabe is humanity's earliest analog computer. I built this working simulation where you can rotate the pierced brass rete, position the sun along the zodiac ecliptic circle, compute ancient unequal planetary hours, calculate equinoctial precession, and listen to procedural clockwork gear indexing.
