The Accident That Birthed Electronic Music: In Petrograd, 1920, young physicist Leon Theremin was building a radio-frequency meter to measure gas density in vacuum chambers. He noticed that as his hand moved toward the metal electrode, the audible whistle produced by two heterodyning high-frequency oscillators shifted pitch in eerie, human-like tones. He immediately began practicing melodies in the air. Theremin went on to perform before Vladimir Lenin, Albert Einstein, and sold-out audiences at Carnegie Hall.
