The Art of Water Gilding

1. Armenian Red Bole

A high-iron colloidal clay applied with warm rabbit-skin glue. Provides the cushion and warm undertone that illuminates the paper-thin gold leaf.

2. Beaten 24k Gold Flake

Beaten between ox gut leaves until only 0.1 microns thick (thinner than a light wave). One ducat covers an entire gospel codex.

3. Agate Tooth Burnish

Rubbed under firm, steady friction using a curved stone tooth until the atoms fuse into an unbroken metallic mirror.
